kadabra

Passionate. The perfect word to describe Kadabra (Dustin Kinney in the real world) when it comes to music and DJ'ing.

"I love getting the party going with just straight up funky house. I love winding things down with something more deep, with some real feeling to it. At the end of the day though I'm a fan of good music and I'm a fan of good DJ's. Regardless of genre, there are ton of folks doing their thing well and everyone deserves time to shine."

He started back in 1998 while still in high school just compiling favorite tracks off CD's onto cassettes to bump in his car and at home. His dad took notice and one day decided to break out the old DJ setup from when he was in high school – including a pair of Technics 1200s (seriously can you get more spoiled?). From that point on things were never the same.

"I've played a few different genres over the years including trance, hard house and breakbeats. There was one mixtape in 2000 though that changed everything for me. Coy West – Soular Sounds is still one of the best programmed mixes I've ever heard. That's really when I fell in love with deep house."

There have been many parties, projects and memories made over the years. The Austin Connection, a public access TV show showcasing local DJ's with cool visuals in the background, hosted by Kadabra. The Zoobeats Collective crew – collaborating on an amazing NYE rave, and throwing another rave called the Art of War featuring a Chinese theme and DJ's battling all night. Co-hosting Blastro Live, another DJ TV show that started out online and then aired for a short time on the Austin Music Network TV Channel.

"When I headed off to college I knew I wanted to get into radio. TV required more content than just having a DJ spin on camera and the music was what I really cared about. Radio seemed like the right direction to head in."

Kadabra became the host and producer of Deck Support on KTSW-FM in San Marcos, TX from 2002-2005. The show featured a local DJ mixing live for 2 hours every Sunday night and an array of different genres were showcased. He also created a monthly series of live shows called "Deck Support: Underground" on campus to go along with the radio show.

"After college I changed gears and took a crack at commercial radio in Austin. I learned a lot as a weekend DJ on Mix 94.7 for a few years. But my passion has always been electronic music and so I eventually moved on from that gig. My heart just wasn't in it."

Today he's married to his high school sweetheart and is a dad to a beautiful baby girl. Having only recently caught up to the digital DJ world, he's now poised to make 2011 a comeback year.

"Right now I'm focused on getting my name out there, meeting a ton of new people and maybe make a few fans along the way. But it will always be about music for me at the end of the day. House is a feeling. Let's keep it going."
